CHAPTER 12

The County Cruiser’s sirens are heard coming from the river, and within moments it came into view of the shoreline. The flood lights from the county boat, and from the sheriff's boat, make it almost like day. The three, Samantha, Jonathan, and Joseph, stood in silence as Evelyn’s body was uncovered. When Samantha saw the body, her hands clenched into fists. She took a deep breath and called on her inner strength, as she walked over to kneel beside the grave. Henry glanced at her, and then to Jonathan, his eyebrows raised in question. He spoke in low tones, “From the looks of it, I'd say she died instantly. The entry wound looks to be left to right, just like the others. We'll get her to the morgue. Maybe we will be lucky and find some fibers, or hairs.

Samantha began to rock to and fro. Her voice was soft, as she asked Henry, “Did you know Evelyn very well?”

Henry shook his head with regret, “Not real well, but I knew her. She lived in Liberty all her life, raised here. Never lived anywhere else that I recollect.”

Henry stood up, and as he did, he put his hand under Samantha's elbow and lifted her to her feet. “I don't reckon she ever did anything that warranted her dying this way. She was a smart lady, maybe she'll be able to tell us something about her killer.”

Samantha turned to look at Henry, her eyes wide. “She knew her killer. The recognition was in her eyes. She knew.”

Samantha walked away, Henry staring after her, as Jonathan joined Henry. “Do your best, Henry. We've got to have some answers.”

“I'll do what I can. What's with the young lady?”

Jonathan's smile was without warmth. “She's a Psychic. She showed us where to find Evelyn, and she ID'd number 3.”

Starring at Jonathan with an unbelievable expression, Henry snorted, “You're kidding, right?”

“I wish I was. But right now, she's all I got that might lead me to the son-of-a-bitch.”

“If Evelyn knew her killer, you might want to know where Joseph was at the time of her death.”

“Dammit, Henry, what is with you and Joseph? You know damn well he's not the killer!”

“No, I don't know, and neither do you! And what's with me and Joseph is the fact I don't know shit about him; and neither do you! He could be a homicidal maniac, for all we know. But, more than that, he could cost you your job because you haven't bothered to let anyone know if Joseph is in the clear.”

“You can trust me on this one, Henry. I know all that's needed to know about Joseph. He's not our guy.”

Jonathan walked away to join Samantha and Joseph.

“It's time you tried to get some rest. I'll take you to Lillian's. Go home, Joseph. I need you to be fresh, come morning.”

As Jonathan stepped on board the cruiser, he looked back at the crime scene, his eyes scanning the tree line, his face grim.
